  • China Powers Global Sweetener Growth as Natural Substitutes Surge to 37% Market Share by 2025
The global sweetener market reached $17.84 billion in 2025, up 8.2% from 2024, and is projected to exceed $26.5 billion by 2030, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 6.8% during the period. The Chinese market accounted for about 32% of global consumption, with its market size reaching RMB 38.46 billion in 2025, a year-on-year increase of 9.5% — outpacing the global average. The core drivers of this growth stem from the sustained release of sugar-reduction demand fueled by rising health awareness, alongside intensive efforts by food and beverage companies to roll out low-calorie and zero-calorie products. In terms of product mix, natural sweeteners (e.g.: Resistant Dextrin, Polydextrose, FOS, IMO, GOS, Crystalline Fructose and etc.) increased their share from 22% in 2020 to 37% in 2025, with steviol glycosides and mogrosides posting CAGR of 14.2% and 18.7%, respectively. Meanwhile, artificial sweeteners such as aspartame and acesulfame K saw their shares contract by 3–5 percentage points, reflecting how consumer preference for "clean-label" products is reshaping the supply landscape. Consumer behavior surveys show that in 2025, 73.6% of respondents proactively checked the types of sweeteners listed on ingredient labels when purchasing packaged foods, up 21 percentage points from 2022. Distribution channels have shown divergent trends: sales growth of sweetener-containing end-products in traditional supermarkets was only 4.1%, while emerging channels such as community group-buying and livestream e-commerce grew at a robust 26.8%, accounting for over 19% of total retail sales. In the foodservice sector, ready-to-drink tea and coffee chain brands increased their procurement of natural sweeteners by 31.2% year-on-year in 2025, driving the B2B supply system toward customization, small-batch production, and higher purity levels. At the same time, cost pressures are taking effect — raw material prices for natural sweeteners rose 12–15% year-on-year in 2025 due to climate conditions and planting area fluctuations, forcing companies to reduce production costs through technological pathways such as enzymatic conversion and fermentation-based alternatives. On the policy front, China, the European Union, and several Southeast Asian countries intensively updated their food additive usage standards during 2024–2025. In March 2025, China's National Health Commission issued a new version of national food safety standards, which refined the maximum usage levels of novel sweeteners such as erythritol and allulose in beverages and dairy products, while also mandating separate labeling of "added sugars" and "sweeteners" on product packaging. The EU, starting in 2025, tightened the acceptable daily intake (ADI) for certain artificial sweeteners by 15–25%, directly affecting the export strategies of related manufacturers targeting the European market. In Southeast Asia, the implementation of sugar taxes in Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines spurred localized production capacity for low-sugar and sugar-substitute products in the region. In the patent and technology domain, a clear trend toward "naturalization" and "biosynthesis" has emerged. As of the first quarter of 2026, among active global sweetener-related patents, 41% involve recrystallization and purification of steviol glycosides, enzymatic synthesis of rare sugars, and microbial fermentation for mogroside production. Chinese applicants accounted for 56% of the total global patent count in these fields. Among patents published in 2025, 34 were directly related to improvements in the industrial-scale production process of allulose, with single-batch conversion rates increasing from 65% to 82%. These technological breakthroughs are propelling domestic Chinese sweetener companies to shift from "raw material contract manufacturing" to "technology-plus-brand" players in the global supply chain. At the business and innovation level, leading companies are transitioning from single-ingredient suppliers to "solution providers." In 2025, the industry saw seven joint R&D agreements involving "sweetener plus functional ingredients," covering compound formulations with dietary fiber, vitamins, prebiotics, and more. OEM/ODM service revenue accounted for over 30% of total revenue among leading sweetener companies for the first time. Some companies launched "7-day custom formulation" services for small and medium-sized brand clients, significantly shortening new product launch cycles. Additionally, pilot applications of blockchain traceability in sweetener raw-material supply chains covered approximately 120,000 mu (about 8,000 hectares) of planting bases in China's Yunnan and Guangxi regions in 2025, enhancing traceability for export products. In terms of trade and import/export, China's total sweetener exports reached 673,000 metric tons in 2025, up 11.2% year-on-year. High-intensity sweeteners (neotame, sucralose) accounted for 36% of export value, though their unit export price fell 3.8% year-on-year, reflecting intensified global market competition. On the import side, the trend was characterized by "high-end raw material sourcing": imports of natural sweetener intermediates from Southeast Asia by domestic enterprises grew 42.1% in value in 2025, primarily for further value-added processing. The impact of U.S.-China trade friction on sweetener tariffs eased in 2025, with tariffs on certain categories exported to the U.S. reduced to 5.2%, driving export volumes to the U.S. back up to 197,000 metric tons. Although the EU's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) pilot phase did not directly include sweeteners, major producers have already begun preparing carbon footprint accounting systems. On the strategic development front, the industry is focusing on three main tracks: upstream — globalized planting and risk hedging of raw materials; midstream — cost reduction and efficiency improvement (particularly the large-scale application of continuous chromatographic separation and membrane filtration technologies); and downstream — vertical deep-diving into application scenarios (pharmaceuticals, daily chemicals, pet food, and other non-traditional sectors). During 2025–2026, multiple companies have launched pilot-scale production lines based on synthetic biology approaches, aiming to achieve cell-factory mass production of certain rare sweeteners by 2028, which could fundamentally reshape the industry's cost curve. In terms of regional competition, Chinese companies, leveraging scale advantages and rapid iteration capabilities, increased their global market share in natural sweeteners from 29% in 2020 to 44% in 2025. However, with emerging producing regions in India and South America on the rise, maintaining technological moats remains a critical challenge.

  • From Sweet Burden to Sugar-Free Indulgence: How Sweeteners Are Becoming a New Favorite in Healthy Consumption
Sugar brings pleasure and serves as an important source of energy for the human body. As living standards rise, the intake of added sugars — both directly and indirectly — has been steadily increasing. However, changes in lifestyle and work patterns have led to a decline in physical labor and overall activity levels, making it difficult for the body to consume the sugar it takes in in a timely manner. Excess sugar that isn't used promptly not only contributes to obesity but may also increase the risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. Additionally, sugar can promote the fermentation of bacteria in the mouth, leading to tooth decay. As health awareness among the public grows, sweeteners(such as resistant dextrin, polydextrose, FOS, GOS and etc.) that reduce sugar without sacrificing sweetness — often called "sugar substitutes" — are being used in an increasing number of applications. These can be found everywhere from sweets like beverages, candies, and pastries to non-sweet products such as sauces and condiments. Sweeteners have become an indispensable ingredient, especially in the low-sugar and sugar-free food market. Driven by strong downstream demand, the production of sweeteners is rising. In 2025, China's sweetener output reached approximately 331,000 metric tons, and it is expected to reach 353,000 metric tons in 2026. With continuous technological advancements and evolving consumer preferences, the sweetener market is also seeing ongoing innovation and development. The extraction and purification technologies for natural sweeteners are improving, further expanding the range of applications for these natural alternatives.

  • Healthy Sweetener Market Heats Up as Allulose Emerges as New Favorite
As global consumers become increasingly health-conscious, the push to reduce sugar intake has turned into a major dietary trend. Excessive sugar consumption is not only linked to blood sugar and lipid imbalances but is also closely associated with chronic diseases such as obesity and diabetes. In response, many countries have introduced policies to curb sugar use, with some levying sugar taxes to drive down consumption of sugary drinks. Against this backdrop, sugar substitutes have emerged and rapidly gained traction. Natural sweeteners, in particular, are gradually replacing certain artificial alternatives and becoming the focal point of the market.     According to industry data, the global sugar substitute market reached $22.1 billion in 2024, marking an 8.1% year-on-year increase. China’s market, meanwhile, stood at RMB 10.1 billion, with a growth rate of 20.9% — far exceeding the global average. In terms of penetration, sugar substitutes accounted for only about 10% of the global sweetener ingredient market in 2019, indicating substantial room for expansion. The current ratio between natural and artificial sweeteners is roughly 4:6, but as health awareness deepens and new natural sweeteners are developed, the penetration of natural options is steadily rising.     Among the many natural sweeteners, allulose stands out as one of the most promising newcomers, thanks to its taste profile, which closely resembles that of sucrose, and its excellent functional properties. Allulose is about 70% as sweet as sucrose but contains only 0.3% of the calories. It does not participate in human glucose metabolism and causes no significant fluctuations in blood sugar or insulin levels. Studies have also shown that allulose offers a range of physiological benefits, including neuroprotection, blood sugar regulation, and lipid reduction, while being better tolerated by the digestive system compared to sugar alcohols.     Notably, allulose is the only sugar substitute capable of undergoing the Maillard reaction — the chemical process responsible for the golden-brown color and appealing aroma of baked goods like breads and pastries. Traditional sweeteners cannot replicate this effect. As a result, allulose is expected to help expand the application of sugar substitutes from beverages into a wider array of food categories, including baked goods, confectionery, and condiments.     To date, allulose has been approved as a food ingredient in several countries, including the United States, Japan, South Korea, Mexico, and Singapore. The global allulose market was valued at approximately 200 million in 2024 and is projected to reach 200millionin2024andisprojectedtoreach200million in 2024 and is projected to reac500 million by 2030. In China, the approval process has been advancing steadily. In 2021, the National Health Commission (NHC) accepted the application to classify allulose as a new food ingredient. In 2024, D-allulose-3-epimerase was approved as a food processing enzyme. Finally, on July 2, 2025, the NHC and the State Administration for Market Regulation officially approved allulose as a new food ingredient — a milestone that opens the door for its application in the domestic market.     In terms of downstream applications, sugar-free beverages remain the dominant segment for sugar substitutes. China’s sugar-free beverage market reached RMB 57.05 billion in 2024, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 42% between 2019 and 2024. However, the penetration rate for sugar-free beverages in China is only about 10%, far lower than in developed countries such as Japan. Sugar-free tea and carbonated sugar-free drinks are the two main categories, with sugar-free sparkling water gaining rapid popularity thanks to the “zero sugar, zero calories” concept, driving demand for sweeteners like erythritol. With the growing adoption of allulose, both the taste and health profile of beverages are expected to improve further.     Looking at consumer demographics, young women are the primary buyers of sugar-free beverages. Their top concerns are product taste, health and fat-reduction benefits, and ingredient composition. This suggests that consumers are less price-sensitive and more focused on balancing health with flavor — a favorable environment for novel sweeteners like allulose, which satisfy taste needs while offering functional health benefits.     From an industry chain perspective, only a handful of companies worldwide have achieved large-scale allulose production. Among domestic players, Bailong Chuangyuan was the first in China to commercialize allulose, with current crystal allulose capacity of 15,000 tons, and is building an additional nearly 20,000 tons of capacity at its factory in Thailand. Their products include resistant dextrin, polydextrose, oligosaccharides and so on.      In international markets, the application of allulose is growing rapidly. Between 2017 and 2021, the number of new products containing allulose in the Asia-Pacific region surged by 1,300%. Major brands such as Coca-Cola, Suntory, and Uni-President have launched allulose-containing beverages. Allulose is also showing broad potential in confectionery, condiments, sports nutrition, weight management, and even diabetes-specific foods. For example, Halo Top in the U.S. offers a low-sugar ice cream combining allulose and inulin, which preserves taste while reducing fat absorption. Japan has included allulose in its list of foods for diabetic patients, with studies showing it can suppress post-meal blood sugar spikes by up to 25%. Source from: Sohu

  • Bailong Chuangyuan Advances with Quality-Driven Growth, Sets Sail for High-Quality Development
YUCHENG, Shandong — Against the backdrop of Healthy China initiatives and global food-industry transformation, Bailong Chuangyuan Biotechnology Co., Ltd., founded in 2005 in Yucheng, has emerged as a driving force in the health-sugar, dietary-fiber and prebiotic sectors. Since listing in 2021, the national high-tech enterprise has expanded R&D, production and sales capabilities and is among a handful of global suppliers with multi-product, large-scale production of health-food raw materials.   Adhering to an industrial-first ethos amid a complex market environment, the company has pursued high-quality development through project construction, technological innovation, global expansion, refined management, Party-led governance and social responsibility. In 2025 the firm delivered a step-change in performance, posting total operating revenue of RMB 1.379 billion, up 19.75% year-on-year, and net profit of RMB 369 million, up 50.06%, achieving both economic and social gains. Reporter: Li Hongzhen   Project Foundation: Upgrading the Industry Chain Focusing on core business and capacity strengthening, Bailong Chuangyuan has optimized output and extended its industrial chain through key projects. The company pushed intelligent capacity upgrades, expanded high-end product lines and extended upstream and downstream linkages to raise both capacity and quality, and to improve efficiency and returns.   On the production side, automation, digitalization and consolidation initiatives upgraded equipment and processes to boost yield and energy utilization while reducing costs and emissions. In 2024 two major projects reached production — an annual 30,000-ton soluble dietary fiber line and a 15,000-ton crystalline sugar line. Both projects integrated digital-twin technology, DCS and real-time monitoring to enable unmanned workshop operations, cutting comprehensive energy consumption by over 40% and markedly improving efficiency and product quality.   Strategic vertical extension and horizontal collaboration guide the company’s supply-chain layout. Strategic partnerships with premium raw-material bases ensure supply and quality control, while customized solutions for downstream sectors — food & beverage, health products and feed — have transformed the company from a single-product supplier into a full-solution provider. Dedicated teams serving leading clients such as Mengniu and BY-HEALTH deepen cooperation and raise product value. These efforts have yielded a resilient, competitive full-chain structure and multiple national and provincial honors, including “Specialized and New” Little Giant, National Green Factory and top rankings in light industry and private-enterprise innovation.   Innovation-Driven: Securing the Technological High Ground Innovation sits at the core of Bailong Chuangyuan’s strategy. Combining in-house R&D with industry–university–research collaboration, the company operates high-standard R&D and testing centers and a professional research team focused on strain breeding, bioprocessing and enzyme engineering. A full-cycle innovation and commercialization mechanism has led to breakthroughs in key technologies.   To date the company has filed over 150 patents and been granted more than 90, including about 80 domestic invention patents and 11 overseas invention patents. It has undertaken national and provincial research projects, received multiple provincial-level science and technology awards, and collaborates with institutions such as Shandong University, Jiangnan University and the China Food Fermentation Research Institute to promote industrialization of advanced technologies.   In November 2025, a joint project with Jiangnan University on “Bio-manufacturing Key Technologies and Industrialization for Functional Carbohydrates” was recognized among 14th Five-Year Plan advanced science-and-technology achievements in light industry, addressing industry bottlenecks and supporting efficient, green production of health-food raw materials. The company pioneered rare sugar D-allulose R&D in 2014, scaled liquid production in 2016, and achieved crystallization technology and industrial production by 2019. Its crystalline D-allulose now exceeds 99.5% purity and is protected by 14 related patents. The company also contributes to national and industry standards, leveraging innovation to offer tailored low-/no-sugar and high-fiber ingredient solutions for major downstream brands.   Global Expansion: Two-Way Market Strategy Executing a “domestic base, global reach” strategy, Bailong Chuangyuan has synchronized domestic and international market growth. Domestically, a comprehensive sales network and technical services underpin long-term partnerships with leading food and health-product companies; the company has expanded customized D-allulose solutions to meet the rising no-sugar beverage market.   Internationally, the company meets global standards with ISO9001, ISO22000 and BRCGS certifications and exports to more than 60 countries and regions, supplying global brands such as Herbalife and Dumex. In July 2025 it launched a smart health-food raw-materials factory project in Thailand with planned capacities including 12,000 tons of crystalline D-allulose, 7,000 tons of liquid D-allulose, 20,000 tons of resistant dextrin and 6,000 tons of fructooligosaccharides. The Thailand project leverages local raw-material cost advantages to lower production costs and expand access to European, North American, Southeast Asian and Middle Eastern markets, marking a shift from “product export” to “brand and capacity export.”   Overseas operations have become a major growth engine, and the company’s dual domestic-international market model strengthens its position in global value and supply chains.   Management Enablement: A Modern, People-Centered Enterprise Bailong Chuangyuan applies “standardized, refined, and humane” management to optimize governance and processes for stable, efficient operations. Quality control is central: the company enforces full-chain quality management, tight supplier selection and dynamic supplier oversight; real-time monitoring of key production parameters helps maintain an annual product qualification rate above 99.8%.   The company emphasizes people development, improving workplace living conditions and employee benefits, and offering systematic training and promotion channels. In 2025 it delivered 46 training sessions reaching more than 1,200 participants. Regular skills contests, cultural and sports activities, and welfare programs strengthen employee engagement and build a capable team to support growth.   Party Leadership and Social Responsibility Bailong Chuangyuan integrates Party building with business and corporate culture, strengthening Party organizations and promoting model roles for Party members in R&D and production. Party teams contributed to the rapid commercialization of crystallized D-allulose, and frontline Party task forces ensure delivery during peak seasons.   Committed to green development, the company has earned recognition as a National Green Factory and other eco-awards, applying waste-heat recovery and concentrate-recycling technologies to lower carbon emissions. It led the formulation of group standards for D-allulose and continues to advance research into resistant dextrin and other functional sugars to support public health while driving upstream and downstream industry collaboration. Socially, the company engages in long-term philanthropy in education and disability support, and provides employment assistance and technical training for regional development. In 2024 it was named the “Most Socially Responsible Listed Company.”   From a small workshop to a listed company that has broken foreign technology monopolies and built global capacity, Bailong Chuangyuan has expanded scale, efficiency and brand influence through innovation, hard work and responsibility. Looking ahead, the company plans to remain focused on bio-health, strengthen technology and product upgrades, use the Thailand facility to optimize global layout, deepen domestic cultivation and international expansion, advance lean and green operations, and fulfill social responsibilities to contribute to industry development, regional economies and public health.   Captions: 1. • What Is Allulose and How Is It Used in Food Products?
Allulose is a type of low-calorie sweetener that is becoming increasingly popular in the food and beverage industry. It belongs to a group of rare sugars and has a similar taste and texture to regular sugar, making it a practical alternative in many applications. Shandong Bailong Chuangyuan is the 1st manufacturer in China to produce D-Allulose.  What Is Allulose? Allulose is a naturally occurring sugar found in small quantities in foods such as fruits and grains. For commercial use, it is typically produced from plant-based sources like corn through an enzymatic process. One of its main advantages is that it provides sweetness with significantly fewer calories than traditional sugar. It also has a minimal impact on blood glucose levels, which makes it suitable for products designed for sugar reduction or controlled diets. Unlike some artificial sweeteners, allulose behaves similarly to sugar during food processing. It can provide bulk, texture, and browning, which are important for maintaining product quality. Key Features of Allulose Low calorie compared to regular sugar Mild, clean sweetness similar to sucrose Low glycemic impact Good stability in processing Supports sugar reduction without major formula changes Because of these properties, allulose is widely used as a functional sugar ingredient rather than just a high-intensity sweetener. How Is It Used in Food Products Allulose can be used across a wide range of product categories. It is especially suitable for manufacturers looking to develop low-sugar or reduced-calorie products. 1. Beverages Allulose is commonly used in soft drinks, flavored water, and functional beverages. It provides a natural sweetness without adding significant calories, making it ideal for “low sugar” or “no added sugar” formulations. 2. Baked Goods In bakery products such as bread, cakes, and cookies, allulose helps maintain moisture and texture. It also supports browning during baking, which improves the appearance and flavor of finished products. 3. Dairy Products Allulose is used in yogurt, ice cream, and other dairy items. It contributes to smooth texture and can help control freezing properties in frozen desserts. 4. Confectionery In sugar-free or reduced-sugar candy and gummies, allulose provides bulk and sweetness while supporting a better mouthfeel compared to some alternative sweeteners. 5. Nutritional and Functional Foods Allulose is widely used in protein bars, meal replacements, and dietary supplements. It helps improve taste while keeping overall sugar content low.
